On Saturday, November 11, Lawyers Fighting Hunger held its Live Local, Give Local Annual Thanksgiving Event, which turned out to be one of the most successful years yet. Members of our firm gathered with nearly 100 other volunteers to pack 1,000 turkey dinners, providing Tulsa families who are experiencing food insecurity with a hearty Thanksgiving meal.
Hugh M. Robert, principal at Sherwood, McCormick, & Robert, co-founded Lawyers Fighting Hunger and organizes the event each year. Over 40 Tulsa-area lawyers, the Oklahoma Association for Justice, and various businesses and individual contributors support Lawyers Fighting Hunger, and our firm is proud to be a platinum sponsor.
“The need in Tulsa continues to increase and with the cuts to the SNAP program, many of the working poor are finding it harder to provide the necessities, let alone a turkey and all the things that go with a Thanksgiving Meal” said Robert.
Lawyers Fighting Hunger has traditionally provided meals to families across the state twice a year, at Thanksgiving and Easter. “The numbers of those needing food are increasing and faces of hunger we are seeing more working poor, grandparents raising their grandchildren on a fixed budget, disabled vets trying to survive on their disability benefits, and families who have three and four jobs just to provide the basics” said Robert.
Lawyers Fighting Hunger raises the money for the dinners, which include a frozen turkey and side dishes. Distributing the turkey dinners is a joint effort by Lawyers Fighting Hunger, Live Local, Give Local, Iron Gate, the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and many area wide agencies and organizations who assist with the screening and delivery of the turkeys and grocery bags.
